If you live in a region where there is heavy snowfall in the winter or if you are a property owner who has difficulty removing snow by hand you could consider purchasing a new or used snowblowers. For areas where there is only light snow or for small drive ways a single stage machine should be adequate. If however your area receives very heavy snow or you have a large area to clear a double stage snowblower would be a better option.

Which Type of Snowblower Do You Need?

When thinking about the model and type to buy take into account the size of the area carefully. Fit the width of the path you have to clear with the clearing width of the snowblower model, to minimise the passes you’ll need to make. Also consider the annual snowfall in your district and how ‘packable’ it is. If you get in the region of fifty to sixty inches of snow a winter a single stage snowblower would be up to the job. For a lot more than this or for regions where the snow is mostly wet through you will really be better with a double stage snowblower that has a motor of seven horse power or higher.

Different Types of Snowblowers

In a single stage snowblower a rotating drum called an auger cuts the snow then lifts it to be expelled through a chute. In a double stage snowblower the snow is cut but then the impellers work to fling the snow into the chute. In this way the snow is thrown further away and with greater power and you can clear the area much more quickly. For both these types the discharge can be adjusted by direction and angle. A double stage snowblower needs more power so a larger motor is needed which, of course, increases the manufacturing costs.

Single Stage Snowblowers

Carefully think about the clearing path when you are buying a new snowblower. Single stage snowblowers have clearing paths of only 20 and 22″ which is acceptable for small areas but would need many passes for a large area. They are fairly easy to maintain and being smaller and more compact are easier to store than a bulkier double stage snowblower. Also examine the wheels. Much larger wheels assist propulsion as the blades of the auger can sink into the ground more and which helps to drive the machine forwards. A single stage snowblower bought new will probably be between $350 and $650 with the more expensive machines usually having a more powerful motor and a wider clearing path.

Double Stage Snowblowers

For double stage snowblowers, clearing paths vary between twenty five to thirty inches with motors from about seven hp to 13hp. Costs range from around $700 to over $2500 for a hefty, heavy duty snowblower for especially large area such as parks, golf courses and public areas. For nearly all householders, with a large area to clear, a more reasonably priced intermediate range machine with a 7-9hp engine and a clearing path between 24 and 36″ ought to be adequate.

Engines

Craftsman snowblowers are equipped with Briggs & Stratton engines which do not need pre-mixing of the gas and oil and have much lower noise, toxic emissions and vibrations. Many of the models have electric starters which are a good deal easier to work with in the cold than a recoil start. Honda snowblowers use Honda Overhead Cam motors which will run for about over an hour on one tank of gas.

Snowblower Sizes and Weights

Consider how heavy the machine is before you purchase it. A number of machines are a lot heavier than others and if you need to manipulate it up and down steps to put it away a very heavy machine will make this harder. Also make certain you have room to store your machine. Double stage machines are bulky and will need more room than a compact single stage snowblower.
