Iguanas are ectothermic, which means that they can’t make their own body heat. As an owner, you must provide your lizard with a source of heat. Their immune system will suffer and they won’t be able to digest their food properly if you don’t. This article will discuss heating for green iguanas.
A mechanism called thermoregulation allows iguanas to regulate their body heat. Using thermoregulation, they can cool or heat themselves from their environment. When they’re too cold, they’re able to move into a warmer area to heat themselves up. They can go to a colder location whenever they get too hot.
With this in mind, it’s important that your ig’s enclosure has warm and cool areas. This gives them the ability for body heat regulation. You should set the temperature between 95 and 100 degrees in the warmer area. It’s best that the cooler area have a temperature ranging from 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit.
You can allow the ambient temperature to fall no lower than 70 degrees at night. You shouldn’t let the temperature rise above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. To keep an eye on the temperature, you should have a few thermometers installed. It’s best to place the thermometers very close to the area the you’re trying to monitor. You won’t get an accurate reading if it’s placed too far away.
You can provide your iguana with heat using two main options. You can use a ceramic bulb or a radiant heat panel. You can install a ceramic bulb in a socket. The radiant heat panel would need to be installed beneath the tank. You can also use the lowest setting of a heating pad designed for humans. This isn’t the best option though. Iguanas should never be given hot rocks because they can easily burn themselves severely.
