What is wrestling?
Wrestling is a sport in which two opponents grapple each other with the object of causing each other to fall to the ground without the use of blows. Wrestling requires not only strength but also speed and mastery of different moves. The number and nature of moves depend on the type of wrestling.

Types of wrestling
There are four types of competitive wrestling practiced at the amateur level.
Greco-Roman wrestling
This form of wrestling prohibits attacking opponents below the waist. Wrestlers can only use their arms and can only hold opponents above the waist. Therefore, much of the action in this sport consists of throwing, or attempting to throw, the opponent. Greco-Roman wrestling has been an Olympic sport since 1896.
Freestyle wrestling
This form of wrestling allows wrestlers to use both arms and legs and to hold opponents both above and below the waist. Like Greco-Roman wrestling, freestyle wrestling has been an Olympic sport since 1896. It is the only form of wrestling in international competition in which women can participate.
Judo wrestling
Judo is a form of wrestling that originated in Japan. The word judo literally means “gentle way,” but the sport itself can be quite rough and demanding. Its name refers to the sport’s philosophy, which is based not on exerting force but on using the opponent’s own force against him. A judo match may be won by throwing the opponent to the ground, pinning the opponent to the ground on his back, or forcing the opponent to submit.
Judo has been an Olympic sport for men since 1964 and for women since 1988.
Sambo wrestling
Sambo is a form of wrestling developed in the former Soviet Union. The word “sambo” is an acronym for a Russian phrase that means “self-defense without a weapon.” There are three types of sambo: sport sambo, which resembles judo; self-defense sambo, which is similar to jujitsu; and combat sambo, which includes the use of blows, weapons, and techniques for disarming an opponent.
Sambo was founded by members of the Russian military who were seeking a refined system of hand-to-hand combat in which to train their ranks.
All four forms of wrestling are excellent sports for developing strength, speed, and coordination. Most colleges and universities offer physical education courses in these sports. You can also get in touch with practitioners of these sports in your community and online to find out how you may learn these forms of wrestling.
